How to improve the interface?
Principles
  1. Automate what you can automate
  2. Decompose the task into steps
  3. Design the interaction for every step
  4. Design for mistakes: "What if the user..."
  5. Provide help for every step
  6. Provide feedback for every step, show when the system is busy

Tips

  1. Allow the reader both to enter keywords and to make choices
  2. Use breadcrumbs
    • to show the location of the current page relative to the site
    • to allow the reader to undo one ore more choices
  3. Use different colours for different functions (use the same colour for the same function)
  4. Divide the page into functional parts. Think of your target audience to decide what functions exist
  5. Show references to related information
  6. Show references to more specific information
  7. Create good metadata
  8. Use a faceted interface
  9. Use language aids (spelling, synonyms, abbreviations, translations)
